Raccoons appearing to be “drunk” were recently spotted in a Canadian neighborhood and people are concerned about the creatures’ strange behavior.
Residents in Ottawa, Ontario, have noticed that the raccoons, which are nocturnal animals, were not acting normally over the past week, Fox News reported. The raccoons, which were caught stumbling around the area and taking “power naps” on the ground, may have eaten fermented fruit by mistake, according to experts.
“He couldn’t really move. He was dragging his legs, he was wobbling, having a hard time standing up,” Emily Rodgers, a resident, told CBC News of a raccoon she observed in the vicinity. “You could tell something was wrong with him for sure.”
Julie Fong, another resident, said a local police officer requested permission to observe her backyard, since there was concern over a raccoon in the neighborhood that seemed “tipsy.”
“So that’s why this guy was kind of sleeping it off under our deck. There was a drunk raccoon under our deck,” Fong said. “He said it was sort of stumbling along, just looking completely off, [like] somebody who may have had a few extra libations would be walking.”
According to Michael Runtz, a Carleton University biology professor, the raccoons may have dined on too many fermented fruits, such as apples, which fall off of trees around this time of year. This could be why the neighborhood raccoons were walking funny and sleeping off their “hangovers” in the middle of the road.
“It’s possible that some of the fruit is fermenting under the heat, and that these guys are getting a bit tipsy by eating that fermenting fruit. Don’t try to give them coffee and get them sobered up, just let them go their course,” Runtz explained to CBC News. “If you’re really concerned about the animal, call…some of the animal control officers to come have a look at it.”
